Working In Enclosed Spaces

A confined space as defined by the UK Confined Space Regulations 1997 is a place that is substantially (but not always entirely) enclosed and that there is a reasonably foreseeable specified risk.

More specifically to maritime operations, The Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Entry into Enclosed Spaces) Regulations 2022 apply. These regulations place duties on shipowners, masters, skippers, fishermen, employers of seafarers and others to take measures to protect seafarers and fishermen from the hazards of entering and/or working in enclosed spaces. Regulation 3.0 defines and enclosed space as being a space which is not designed for continuous worker occupancy and has limited opening for entry and exit and/or inadequate ventilation.

At Ocean Technical Safety Services Ltd we have extensive experience of working under both sets of regulations and can provide advice, training and operational assistance to ensure that your enclosed space operations are completed safely.
